Life As A Homeowner

Today I took a huge step into being a true adult. I bought a house. A 1935 home in the Historic Hampton-Pickney district of Greenville. It was tough work and tough decisions, but ultimately, I am so excited. I. Bought. A. Home.
About to open the door!

And while I am only starting in my homeownership, I am already seeing the benefits and downsides.

Benefits:
I can hang stuff wherever I want, paint whatever I want, and do whatever I want. I own this shit!
I can do a fixer-upper project and reap the benefit. No more worrying that I'll have to take it down after my lease ends, or leave the value for the apartment agency.
My mortgage is only $100 more than my rent when I lived in Raleigh, yet I actually own this. Whenever I move, I will sell it and get money back. No more throwing away my money!
I have land. No one stomping above me, barking dogs below me, and loud music beside me. Just me, my house, and my plot of land.

Sure, there are the required upkeep of an older home (in my case, way older!) but I love it! Yesterday, I made Matt come in the backyard and help me pick up sticks and debris from the yard while my tiniest kitten roamed a backyard for the first time in her life (she took it as an opportunity to roll in the dirt, successfully becoming a giant ball of dust).

I am so excited about the opportunity to decorate and design how I please! I've already been ripping pages out of the Restoration Hardware Spring 2011 catalog and taping them to the walls where I want featured items to go (and hoping to find antique stores with items that fit my wallet much better!)

Many pictures to come, so get pumped!

I've got some great pictures to come of the new place, but I am so excited about this next step in my life!

Kittens and Cats: The Littles

I am a huge animal lover. Raised in a family that took in every stray, I have a hard time seeing a homeless animal and not feel sadness about their lack of a loving home.

When I lived in Raleigh, I volunteered at the County Animal Shelter and (surprise, surprise) ended up finding one to bring home. While playing with cats, there was one who was bouncing off the walls of his (we later found out he was a she) cage, and was reaching out and grabbing onto whatever person walked too close to the cage. I took the kitten out, and fell in love immediately. Said kitten immediately curled up in my arms and went hard to work giving me a kitten bath. I went to the front of the office, paid my deposit to have him (her) fixed, and went home to prepare for my new bundle of joy, Jack.

The day I was due to pick him (her) up, I got there early and was looking and playing with the other kittens who didn't have homes yet. Another volunteer pointed out a tuxedo cat in a bottom corner cage to me, and told me the life story of this cat. "His name is Kenny, he's been here for quite a while and is beginning to get depressed. He's a sweet cat, but because people tend to gravitate away from black cats." One look at the handsome boy and I knew he had to be mine too.

Jack & Kenny
So I ended up being that cat lady with two little's exploring their new home.

They use me as a playground, a warm lap to sleep in, and provider of all food and water. And they have given me so much more than I could ever give them. They often do adorable things like sleep right next to my head on my pillow, climb in the shower with me, and try to help me type on the computer. And they do bad things, like try to help me cook, hide in the closet when they know its time to go on a trip, and knock all of my pens off of my desk (it is so hard to find something to jot a note down around here!).

But they are also my best subjects for photography and I make many decisions that revolve around them. Even down to the house that I just bought. "well I need a yard so Kenny and Jack can explore!" "we need a separate room for an office where I can lock the kittens out while I work!" "I need to have a house big enough for them to run and play all day while I am at work!"

So yes. I am that lady. But c'mon, look at 'em. Their little faces would make your heart melt too.

Favourites on Friday - Fellow Road Warriors Edition

Part of a recurring blog style, I want to share my favourites of the moment with you! As I spend more time on the road, I start to pick up on things that make life easier for those of us who live Hotel to Hotel, and spend more time on an airplane or in a car than in your actual house.

1. Sirius XM radio: My car came with sirius radio, and I can't imagine traveling without it! No more scanning for stations when I move out of a radio tower area, I can save my favourite stations and listen to them no matter where I am. Only downside: my car's sirius xm expired after 6 months, and the $12/mo is a steep price for someone who only listens to 12 stations.

2. Renting audio-books from the Cracker Barrel: For those of you who don't have sirius radio, or would rather catch up on your reading list but can't because you're, i don't know, behind the wheel of a car 14+ hours a week (c'mon, raise your hands!), Cracker Barrel has a great solution for you. They allow you to rent audio-books for $3.49 a week, and return/exchange them at any cracker barrel. Their program works by you paying the initial cost for an audiobook (usually ~$45), then after you bring it back to trade out, you're refunded the full amount minus $3.49. You're then lent another one for $3.49 a week. I have gotten in the habit of saving all of my discs to my itunes so that I can listen to them on the ipod instead of having to switch out CDs, but it helps the time go by fast. With great selections like John Grisham and Lee Childs, I'm pretty happy with this program so far.

3. WWW.Manilla.com: Since I am a road warrior, I am not home all that often to check my bills, and I frequently will leave them at home forgetting that they are due the week of. Now you may say "well emily, why not just use automatic billpay?" and my response would be I don't know how. I can not figure out for the life of me how to set up my bills on my banks website. In comes manilla.com. I use it to manage my hotel & air mile rewards accounts, credit card bills, checking account, magazine subscription, and internet bills. I check one website, it tells me whats due, how much, and when (yay!!! easy organization!). Only thing I could wish for more was the option to access it from my Blackberry & upload my giftcards to keep track of balances (hint hint).

4. Exxon Speedpass: this handy little gizmo hooks onto my keychain, and makes filling up at the station so quick. I scan it at the pump, and it has my credit card information and preferences stored. This saves me time by not having to dig out my credit card, confirm its a credit card, type in my zip code, say 'yes i want a receipt', and eliminates the worry about losing my receipt because it saves all of my transactions on their website. Me being the misplacing person I am (seriously, ask my boyfriend. In my personal life, I can't find a darn thing), this is quite helpful!

If you have anything that you find helpful when you're out on the road, feel free to let me know! I am always open to new ideas to making life easier.

Tha Deli - Manchester, GA

Inside
This was a cute little gem found in Manchester, GA. While driving, I was reaching the point of famine and my gps pulled this up as the closest location to me.

Deli by day, steakhouse by night, and the frequent wedding reception venue in town, this place captures a certain charm with an exposed brick wall, exposed beams and pipping and decorations contributed from weddings past.

I personally ordered a BLT - old fashioned, but good. The sweet tea was delicious (although one diner said it was 'too sweet' if that's even possible), and they give you the pitcher with your cup (no empty cups or waiting for a drink refill!)

Friendly staff and a location beside a park and a lake make this a cute setting and a place to keep on my list for next time I roll through town.

A Slice of Heaven - Andrews, SC

Last week on my business trip, I was lucky enough to be directed to A Slice of Heaven Bakery & Deli located in Andrews, South Carolina.

A Slice of Heaven
Downtown Andrews

The Wonderful Cindy & Christine in the shoppe!
Now Andrews is an absolutely tiny town located between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, with a charming downtown and some delicious eats.

I am always in search for an amazing Chicken Salad, and this place definitely tops the list! A delicious blend with some dried cranberries made this lunch stop a treat (as did the moist red velvet cupcake I had for dessert!)

The two ladies working that we got to talk to also added to the environment. Both had military ties (Christine had married into the military and moved from Guam, Cindy was raised by a military family) and had been friends with each other since they met in Guam.

Overall, it was a delicious place to stop for a quick lunch in a small town, and support local businesses.
